About the company
Betula Noir LLC is an independent product studio in Austin, Texas. We build our own software and take on a small amount of outside work.
Betula Noir was founded in 2026 to build software properly and stand behind it: to design and ship products worth keeping on a device, publish them under our own name, and answer for them afterwards at an address a person actually reads.
The studio is deliberately small. The same hands that design a product write its code, cut its releases, and reply to its support mail. That is unusual enough to be worth stating plainly, and it is the reason our feedback loop is short: there is no layer between the decision and the implementation, and nothing gets lost in a handoff.
What we do
We work in two modes, and they feed each other. Publishing our own products keeps our judgment about real software sharp, because we live with every decision we make. Consulting keeps us honest about constraints, deadlines, budgets, and inheriting other people's code.
Our own products
We design, build, publish, and support original software. The catalogue starts with duk., a single-player puzzle game for iPhone, currently in TestFlight beta. Our products carry no advertising, no accounts, and no tracking, and we keep maintaining them after release rather than moving on.
Product consulting
We take a limited number of outside engagements: shaping an early idea into something buildable, designing and building an iOS or web application, or helping a team get a stalled release finished. Because the studio is small, we take on few engagements and give each one real attention. What we take on and how an engagement runs is set out on the consulting page.
How we work
- Scoped in writing first. Before work starts you get the scope, the approach, the timeline, and the price in writing. No surprises invoiced later.
- Progress you can see. We show working software as it happens rather than presenting at the end, so course corrections are cheap.
- We say no. If we are not the right fit for a piece of work, we say so instead of taking it. A bad fit costs you more than a decline does.
- Durable choices. We pick technology we can still maintain in five years over whatever is new this quarter.
What we care about
Software should respect the person using it. In practice that means no dark patterns, no manufactured urgency, and no advertising in anything we publish. It means privacy as a default rather than a setting we bury: our apps collect nothing unless collecting it is the actual feature, and duk. collects nothing at all. It means accessibility and typography are part of the work rather than a pass at the end.
